What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a short-term psychotherapy which emphasises that cognitions (thoughts) can influence how we feel and what we do. Therefore, changing the way we think can result in positive changes in emotions and behaviours.

Unlike other type of psychotherapy the focus of CBT is on the "here and now" of problems and difficulties. This form of therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of both Mood and Anxiety Disorders by research conducted over many years.

There are several variations of CBT, some of which are used at Melbourne Metro Psychology:

  • Cognitive Therapy
  • Behavioural Therapy
  • Mindfulness Cognitive Based Cognitive Therapy
  • Schema Therapy

It should be noted that no one approach works better than all the others in all circumstances and it is important that you find a therapist that you trust and is qualified to help you.
